AI in fleet management: what is an MCP server?

In short
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard through which artificial intelligence (e.g. Claude, ChatGPT) can query data from a business system securely and directly. In fleet management, this means the fleet manager asks a question in natural language — “which of our vehicles has become more expensive to operate over the last quarter, and why?” — and the AI answers from the real fleet data.
Why does this change everything?
Until now, the data of fleet management systems lived in reports and on screens: anyone who wanted an answer had to know which menu and which filter to use. With an MCP connection, no user manual is needed between the question and the answer: the AI understands the question, retrieves the data and also points out connections — trends, outlier vehicles, causes.
Where does FleetControl's AI integration stand?
FleetControl's MCP server is under development; as a first step, it is being built for Claude AI, which will make it possible to query FleetControl data directly in natural language. [Status to be updated at publication]
This direction is also part of our fleet audit service: we already analyse the questionnaires we receive with AI support, under expert review.
What should a fleet do today?
AI is only as good as the data beneath it: on estimated, incomplete data kept in Excel, AI can only estimate too. Those who switch to automated, CAN-level collection of factual data today will run their fleet with a single question tomorrow — for those who stay with spreadsheets, the AI era will also mean manual work.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI access to fleet data secure?
The MCP connection is tied to permissions: the AI can only access what the given user is authorised to see, and access is logged. [Details at launch]
Which AI models will it work with?
Initially with Claude; MCP is an open standard, so the range can be extended.
